Scorpion UV Light Safety Precautions

These Ultra-Violet (UV) lights are used for a variety of purposes such as detecting counterfeit currency, disease and parasites in the faeces of carnivores, cracks in metal, etc and can be used by guides to locate scorpions at night.

This is because scorpions exhibit the peculiar characteristic of fluorescing under UV light to appear as a bright yellowish colour, making them easy to find if you search for them in the following places, especially on warm, windy nights:

  • Bases of grass tufts
  • Holes in trees or cracks of bark in trees such as Acacias
  • Fallen logs or rocky areas (including buildings made of stone)

Although the reason for this is still misunderstood (and there are a number of theories), there is a good chance that scorpions can probably see and communicate in the UV spectrum, enabling location of mates, enemies and potential food (big scorpions eat smaller scorpions).

However, only the hardened exoskeleton exhibits this phenomenon and immediately after moulting they do not fluoresce. Even their droppings and spermatophores (male seed sacs) fluoresce. This phenomenon is also apparent in some beetles.

** DO NOT SHINE DIRECTLY IN THE EYES **

These lights do not pose any danger to their user or other observers BUT if used for extended periods without a break can lead to headache or drowsiness / eye-strain because the human eye does not detect most of the UV spectrum and although the light is bright, the eye pupil remains dilated and tires out the retina.

UV amber safety glasses are therefore recommended where the lights are going to be used regularly and for extended periods!
